Monterey Select Board
Minutes of the meeting of 12/14/09
Meeting Opened at: 4:00pm
Select Board Members Present: Scott Jenssen, Chairperson, Jon Sylbert and Wayne Burkhart
Also in attendance for parts of the meeting: Sue Protheroe for the Monterey News, Steven Pullen, Michael Zanin, Amy Lane and Peter Chait
The board met with Police Chief, Gareth Backhaus to review the following items:
1. 2 calls for loose cows on Main Rd.
2. False alarms on Main Rd. and Beartown Mtn Rd
3. Report of a stolen leaf blower on Pixley Rd.
4. Report of a stolen name sign on Main Rd property.
5. Deer hit on Corashire Rd.; officer needed to put it down
6. Tree on wires on Hupi Rd., Mt Hunger Rd., Cronk Rd,
7. Power line down on Wellman Rd.
8. Disabled MV on Mt Hunger Rd
9. Request for lifting assistance.
10. Assisted with a medical call on Art School Rd.
11. Helped to locate the owner of some property left on Blue Hill Rd.
12. Abandoned 911 call on Mt Hunger
13. Walk in that complained of an assault and battery; arrest was made, person turned themselves in voluntarily.
14. Hunter lost in swamp; referred to the fire department.
15. Assisted with 2 medical calls on Main Rd and Tyringham.
16. A past domestic issue party came in to thank the police department for their help; if it hadn’t been for them she wouldn’t have gone through the process.
17. The emergency phone has been installed on the outside of town hall; when you pick it up it dials into the Monterey Police Department, if an officer is not in town hall the call will go directly to the police dispatch.
18. Chief Backhaus was given a copy of his employee review to look over and come back with any questions or comments he had.
The board met with Town Accountant, Barbara Gauthier to review the following items:
1. Warrants were signed.
2. B. Gauthier confirmed that state owned land money was cut (PILOT); we were supposed to get $132,477 and we received $80,157 (a difference of $52,320). J. Sylbert had heard that the money would be put back in.
The board met with Inter-Departmental Secretary, Melissa Noe to review the following items:
1. Weekly report was reviewed.
Miscellaneous Select Board Items Reviewed:
1. The minutes from 12.7.09 were approved as written.
2. The Board conducted interviews for the Town Accountant position with the following interviewees: Steve Pullen, Michael Zanin and Amy Lane. B. Gauthier was also present during the interviews. The Board confirmed that the job would require at least 16 hours per week with a minimum of 6 of those hours being during normal town hall hours. B. Gauthier stated that her last day would be April 26th and that training of the new person would occur during the month of April. The Board is hoping to make a decision by mid-January.
3. A letter was received from the Tyringham Select Board asking Monterey to fill the large holes with stone that are on the Monterey side. It was noted that there aren’t any homes on this road on the Monterey side. The Board will forward the letter to the Director of Operations to discuss at the next meeting and update us on the status of the road.
4. Executive session minutes from 7/16/07, 7/30/07, 8/6/07 & 8/25/08 were approved as written.
A motion was made and unanimously approved to adjourn the meeting at: 5:30pm
